Beauty Left in the Corners
Art is not only about how beautiful it is. What matters even more is how it is presented, where it is placed, and how carefully it is preserved. Our perspective toward art ultimately determines its true position. As part of Dulonchapa, we visit different places, explore artistic practices, and try to connect with creative works. Recently, during a visit to Jahangirnagar University, we noticed a craft piece while walking through the old Fine Arts building at night. The work was most likely an academic project — perhaps the result of significant effort, thought, and emotion. Yet after submission, it seems to have been left neglected in a corner.
The way surrealism has been expressed in this work is something those who engage deeply with art will surely recognize and appreciate. We will not go into that discussion today.
The rightful place of an artwork is never in neglect. The environment surrounding it becomes part of its language. When something meant to be seen, preserved, and appreciated is left uncared for, it reflects not only the undervaluation of a single piece, but also our broader attitude toward artistic practice. If we have the privilege, we definitely took that work with us.
Beauty does not reach fulfillment through creation alone — ensuring its rightful place and respect is equally our responsibility.
